Anyone else heard of this? Anyone played it? Also, what about "Afta-Stuba!", also by Ford?
A friend reccomended them to me, but I've never heard of them before.
I played "Stubernic" with Mark Ford and Kirk Rustman about five years ago when I was living out in Illinois. Interesting piece, and a fun piece (for both the players and the audience), with some fairly challenging sections in the non-soloist parts and some interesting challenges in terms of ensemble playing. I don't think it's anything that three good college-level players couldn't put together.
Sorry I don't have any more details for you - I haven't played the piece since, and my memory of it is a little bit rusty. I've also never played "Afta-Stuba."

Great piece. I played it last summer with two other people and it is great fun. I've never played Afta-Stuba!, but I've heard it numerous times and prefer Stubernic.

Thanks for your interest in Stubernic and Afta-Stuba! If you would like to hear these pieces Stubernic is on my CD Polaris. Afta-Stuba! is also recorded on my new CD Motion Beyond.

"Stubernic" and "Afta-Stuba" are both written for 3 people on one 4.3 marimba. "Stubernic" (which I had the joy of playing last year) has a great 4 mallet cadenza for the middle marimbist (I had so much fun playing around with that part!) If you don't have a recording of Ford playing it... you should go ahead and get it he does an outstanding job (even more enjoyable to see him perform it live)... the Polaris CD also has "Process of Invention" (a very sweet piece) on it.

I played stubernic when I wz a freshman in HS. It was pretty sweet, and we always got huge applause. Both the people i played it with have now graduated, and no one that is left is up to it. It's cool and want to bring it back!!
Does anybody have some really good 1920's style solos or duets? I want something for a themed show.
Very good piece to play. Some of the high school students are playing it and I'm thinking about giving my middle schoolers a challenge to play it at PASIC next year. It's not too expensive, try SteveWeissMusic.com. Best of luck and give it a shot!
