Does anyone have a reccomendation about mallet selection for the Marimba part in the second movement? Our director always complains about the 'clangy' sound I get because I'm using a little bit harder mallet to make it voice all the way on the top octave. Thanks.

Dan,

FWIW, when I performed "Prague" back in my college days (mid-late 80s), we used the Malletech Dave Samuels mallets (the harder model) to cover the marimba parts, on Musser M250 marimbas. This was in a fairly lively concert hall. The Samuels mallets worked out well for us - they cut through while still giving a fairly full tone.

Of course, I have to mention my usual "what mallet should I use" caveat: the "right" mallet depends upon the players, the hall, the instrument(s), the conductor, the ensemble, etc. If I were to play "Prague" today, I might use the Samuels mallets again, or I might not. As always, YMMV.
