So it's harder than Velocities?
If Abe represents Japanese style,
Velocities would be a N.A. style work,
and Zikovic's Ultimatum would be an European work?
Am I right? So I could use them for audition then?
But how is the style of Ultimatum different from
Abe's work. More dissonance? Tanaka's Two Movement
resembles Ultimatum with the use of dissonant intervals
and the rthymic drive but he uses less of them.
Is that the difference? I believe that the N.A. works
are totally differnent from Japanese works. Is it because they use more of a like traditional technique or something?
I'm not sure what the faculty at Berklee are looking for, as I've never had any contact with that school, but generally speaking:
Rather than thinking "European v. Japanese v. American," I'd gear the audition around the idea of presenting yourself as a player, by performing a piece or pieces of music which demonstrate your musical abilities. I could certainly see a comparison of marimba compositional styles by region being the subject of a lecture/recital or thesis, but as an audition, I'd focus more on purely musical concerns. Show your rhythmic abilities, show your technical abilities, but also show your ability to phrase.
I know I'm starting to sound like a "Johnny One-Note," as seemingly every time I post to this board I suggest preparing some Bach, but...
