I am considering the University of Illinois for graduate school and I am curious as to what literature, especially on marimba, but also on timpani, snare drum, etc., you would expect an entering graduate student to have played? Thank you.

Thank you for your interest in UIUC. You may contact me directly at wmoersch@uiuc.edu (You did not specify what level of graduate study, MM or DMA, so I will assume MM.)

I expect an entering graduate student to have a solid technical grounding in keyboard, timpani & snare / multi and to be reasonably well versed in both ensemble (orchestra) and solo repertoire. See my "Marimba Syllabus & Repertoire List" posted elsewhere on this site for specifics, but the general goal is to have played at least one item from each section of the list by the time you finish a DMA. For an entering MM, that would ideally include Sections I-VI, plus perhaps one or two pieces beyond.

On timpani, by the conclusion of undergraduate study I have usually covered Raynor Carroll's etudes, standard orchestral repertoire, and solo works of Carter and others; on snare, etudes of Cirone, Peters and Delecluse, standard orchestral repertoire and solo works of Masson and others. I expect an entering MM to have roughly the same level of preparation.
