Those of us who are vibraphonists owe Hamp a great debt of gratitude, not only for his artistry, but for bringing the vibraphone into the consciousness of so many music fans around the world. Whenever I tell someone that I play the vibraphone, and they're not sure what that instrument is, I simply mention the name "Lionel Hampton," and almost always they recognize who (and what) I'm talking about.
He will be missed.
