I have a small or big problem, it depends on how you look at it. I teach percussion at a high school as an assistant band director. Some of the mallet instruments that we use are in bad need of tuning. The head director sees no reason to have them tuned (doesn't want to spend the $) Has anyone had success in tuning mallet instruments "at home"? The key word is Success. I once read a Gordon Peters article in "The Drummer: Man" text and he explains with a little detail how it is done. I haven't really ventured into tuning my own. Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

One person's opinion, take it FWIW:

You couldn't pay me enough to experiment with tuning for the first time, on an instrument I need for performances.

If you really think this (tuning) is something to get into, find yourself an old "beater" instrument on eBay, and have at it. Consult an established tuner (if they're available for such consultation) for advice and suggestions - for example, dealing with the fact that (as I understand it) the dust created when working with rosewood, is dangerous to one's health.

As always, YMMV...
