Has anybody played this piece by Jo Kondo? I'm looking for a quartet of some kind for a third year recital. Thanks for the help.
This piece is typical of Kondo's "sen no ongaku" or line music. It is scored for flute, clarinet, marimba and piano. The piano part can be played by a second marimba. Unfortunately, I don't think this is one of Kondo's better works. If you want something in the same style, I suggest his piece named STANDING (1973) published by Zen-On. It is scored for any three instruments as long as they belong to different families. I have heard and played it mostly with marimba, flute and piano.
If you aren't looking particularly for a mixed chamber group work, you could consider Kondo's two marimba trios. First is LUSTER GAVE HER THE HAT AND HE AND BEN WENT ACROSS THE BACKYARD (1975) and second is A VOLCANO MOUTH (1986). Both pieces are published by University of York Music Press in the UK.
LUSTER GAVE HER THE HAT... is typical Kondo - interlocking rhythmic parts and was written for Atsushi Sugahara's Three Marimba Group. VOLCANO is mostly a soft rolled piece commissioned by Sumire Yoshihara. VOLCANO has been recorded by the Mexican percussion group TAMBUCO.
