I'm always looking to pick people's mind and see what opinions are out there and so forth so here is another question for response from all of you. What pieces do you think display a really good tonal/harmonic language. There are those pieces out there which are based on atonal means, or pitch class sets. I am leaning towards pieces like My Lady White, or Process of Invention...which are very tonal and straighforward. But I'll leave it open anything. Let me know what you think
Hi Ben,
In regard to your question, i highly recommend Jacob Druckman's masterpiece "Reflections on the Nature of Water." I also recommend Richard Rodney Bennett's piece "After Syrinx II."
Even though R.R. Bennett began as a serialist composer utilizing techniques pioneered by Schoenberg and Boulez, he began to break away from that system in the late 1970's and chose to explore a more tonal format to express his compositional ideals. "After Syrinx II" is one of Bennett's first pieces where he began to write in a tonal style, while still holding on to the serial techniques. I highly recommend it along with the Druckman.
Best of luck in your studies.
Sincerely, Lon Stetz
