Hello All-
I recently got an old Deagan marimba that's
in need of re-stringing and a good cleaning.
I would appreciate any tips about how to re-
string a marimba (what kind of string, if I
need felt spacers, etc.) and how to clean the
bars.
Thanks, Brian
I have found that parachute string works nicely. You can find it at any army surplus store. As for cleaning the bars.....I have no idea about what kind of finish you are dealing with...better safe than sorry, ask someone at a percussion store, or just use a clean cloth.
Be very careful what you put on your bars! Try linseed oil, but I don't know what you need cleaned off. The oil will remove surface dirt and restore luster, but if you need more than that, I would check with Bill Youhass at Fall Creek, Gilberto at Century Mallets, or Brian Stotz at Repaircussion. Don't ask your local music shop, because I would be surprised if anyone there knew much about marimba bars. Consult an expert. Good luck!
