To all,

Are there any Latin Jazz SOLO marimba players out there. I know of Dave Samuels, James Walker, Arthur Lipner and other musicians playing that style with duos and full bands. I don't know anyone playing SOLO marimba in a Latin/Brazilian style with improvisation. If they are out there where do they perform?
Please give me any leads.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

You may want to check out Julie Spencer. She's done a few solo pieces that have a latin flavor to them. The one solo album that I know of is called "Ask." Sheet music is available at Steve Weiss.

Definitely check out Orlando Cotto. He is from Puerto Rico, but he teaches at Northern Illionois University. He has two CDS, "A little Prayer", and "Caribenos".

He not only is a fantastic marimbist, but he is also a killer conga player. Many of the tracks on his CDs feature him playing marimba and congas with the help of multi-track editing.

His marimba playing has many latin influences. I think he is what you are looking for.

His website is www.orlandocotto.com.
