Hi everyone,
I am playing an 8-page piece for an audition coming up. What would be the best way to set up the music. Any suggestions? I know its a stupid question, but I want the judges to get a good view of what's going on. and for some reason it might seem weird to have like three music stands set up. Or not?

Behzad,

Assuming that you choose (or prefer) not to memorize, my suggestions are:

1) use the fewest number of music stands possible
2) position the music stands either low, with the TOP edge of the stand BELOW the surface of the accidentals, or with BOTTOM edge of the stand 3-5" ABOVE the surface of the accidentals. The audience MUST be able to stick the mallets strike the instrument
3) Repaginate or use fold-outs so that the page turns occur between sections or phrases of the music.

Taking a guess that you are refering to Mirage, play from the printed edition using one music stand, with page turns at the end of p. 17 (use one-hand roll while turning), the end of p. 19, and add a fold-out of p. 22 (or memorize three lines) and turn during the G.P. before f-1. Simple!

I played that piece with the music also in front of me. here is what i did.
-I took some poster board and pasted half the piece to one side of the poster board. I fliped the music over where the funeral march starts, I am not sure what measure that is, but it is where you have the two grace notes played softly, follow by some SFZ//FF intergections. That work for me and there was the only one page turn. If you paste the music long ways, you only need to have one music stand and you can keep the music low.

Just an idea, but it is what did, and it seemed to work.
also, when i pasted up the music, i did it in such a way that music could be flipped instead of turned around. this way it was much less distracting.
