So what's everybody working on in terms of rep? Any performances coming up that you're getting anxious for (to play in or to go see)?
Just starting some conversation,
Chris
I will tell a little story about what I have been doing, as you said, to make conversation.
I have auditions for school. I just auditioned at UMaryland for Rebecca Kite and John Tafoya. For my marimba solo, I did Sueyoshi's "Mirage pour Marimba". I recently ordered a DeMorrow 5.0 octave practice marimba. Its awesome! The sound is very nice for a practice marimba, but its also a great reflection of your mallet choice. There is a great deal of seperation of notes, so it makes me work harder to not only get a good tone, but to clearly articulte everything. Once I got on the Adams for the audition, my sound was very nice, due to "training" on the DeMorrow. It REALLY helped me out. Oh, and I would like to give a "shout out" to Mr. Moersch and the others on here who helped me with my questions about the piece.
In mid-Feb., I have my audition at the Peabody conservatory for Robert Van Sice. I hooked up with Svetoslav Stoyanov ( http://www.svetoslav.com) who is taking his master's there and also on the faculty of the prep. school. He is an AMAZING percussionist. He is showing me all the ins and outs of what Mr. Van Sice will be looking for in my audition. If anyone gets to the opportunity to see him in concert, please do! He actually had a recital at Carnegie last December. He is also a Concert Artist Guild winner for 2003. Not too bad, eh? 🙂 So I still have that one audition that I need to get ready for. I got accepted to Peabody once, but this time I think they are going to be judging me harder, because I am a transfer.
As far as repertoire: Since I have the DeMorrow 5.0 octave, I can work on alot of stuff that I have been meaning to work on. A few things are above me, but non the less, I will work on them just to get my chops going. Here is what I hope to either learn or just work on to clean up my playing:
1) Druckman "Refelctions..."
2) Thomas "Merlin"
3) Mackey "See Ya Thursday"
4) Abe "Marimab D'amour"
5) Vinao "Khan Variations".
Speaking of Khan, if you have not heard this piece, it is REALLY awesome. It is my most favorite marimab piece right not. Ita above my level at the moment, but I would do ANYTHING to learn this piece. I contacted the composer and got a copy of the music and the CD. Incedently, the Cd had a recording of Khan done by Svetoslav! What a Coincidence. When I first met Svet, he played a bit of it for me, its amazing!
well, enough of my blabbering... 🙂
