This is one of my most favorite pieces of all time. I have worked on it a bit here and there for the past couple months. Mr. Klatzow is truly a genius. And the use of silence especially in the first movement is simply breathtaking. The first movement is coming along very well. I sat myself down and analyzed the quarter-note triplet theme on the bottom clef to see how it works out to the top clef. So I kind of get what is going on now. But I am still having some trouble with the second movement. I feel that the rhythm in this piece is extremely important in order to do this piece justice. My biggest concern is the quituplet thems all through out, especially making them fit with the triplet/sextuplet themes before and/or after the quintuplets occur.
In the second movement, I am thinking of measure two (beats 2 and 3) broken down to quintuplet sixteenth notes. So the notes are played on one-two-THREE-FOUR-FIVE | one-TWO-THREE-FOUR-five. Is this the approach I should take with the rest of the piece? Measure 18 just gives me a huge headache. Its got two sets of quituplets, so if subdividing, there are 10 quituplet sixteenth notes underneath each bracket. But there are only two brackets of quituplets in that measure. Am I too think that in this measure (m. 18), each bracket of quintuplets equals out to 1.5 of the meter's beat? So its almost like if one would right "5:1.5" (five over one and a half). And to make it more difficult, after everything is said and done, in the next measure you have the triplets them from the first measure.
Am I thinking about this too much? Because, its driving me CRAZY! I am sure I could fake it, but I feel Mr. Klatzow had a reason for the quintuplet superimposition (if that's even a word).
Oh, one more thing. I am assuming the first movement is "Earth" and the second is "Fire", right? 🙂

The thing is not that difficult as it appears:
Take measure 85 as example. The feel is in 3, so the subdivision is easily to do in 5; 5 8th not 16th as you thought. - The rhythm in meaure 18 is a swinging balkan-style feel, you only have to set your "insideclock" to alla breve!
