I am 14 going to turn 15 and I am trying to extend my repertoire of songs on the marimba for future concerts. So far I have Rythm Song, Two Mexican Dances, Concerto by Paul Creston, Yellow After the Rain, Rain Dance, Gitano, Czardas, and Divertimento for alto sax and marimba. If you have any suggestions for songs to add to my list please let me know. I am looking for difficult songs preferably grade V and up.

Johnny -

Based on your current repertoire, I'd suggest any of the following as a logical next step:

Bach violin sonata or partita. I'm most familiar with the Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, and Partitas no. 1 and 3 are also common choices. You may opt to do just a movement or two, rather than the entire piece, such as the Bourree from the first Partita, or the Prelude from the third Partita.

Suite for Marimba (Fissinger). A staple in the repertoire. If you can handle the Dances and Rhythm Song, this piece is within your reach.

Toccata for Marimba by Emma Lou Diemer. Two-and four-mallet sections.

Astral Dance by Stout. Commonly combined with the Two Mexican Dances to form a suite.

Perhaps some Japanese music?
Frogs (Abe) - one of the more technically accessable Japanese pieces for a high school or early college student;
Conversation (Miyoshi) - Might be a little tough, but worth checking out.

Hope this gets you started. Best of luck,

JW
