Hi All

I'm looking for a Miki 'Marimba Spiritual' replacement to work up for some marimba quartet and solo shows, wondering if anyone has any ideas. I've checked out Zivkovics 'Uneven Souls' and Glassocks 'Off Axis' (i think) recently and found them both kind of monotonous, also have seen Vertigo (comp?) and the Burritt pieces lately, they too are not what I'm looking for.

I'd like to find something exciting and somewhat demanding of the marimbist while being intellectually or musically interesting - any ideas? Ideally the percussion instrumentation would lend itself to touring (i.e. readily available instruments), but this isn't as critical to me as finding something I like.

thanks!

I think Michael Burritt's Waking Dreams is the best of his marimba & percussion (5 perc) pieces.

Vertigo is by Andy Harnsberger.

You might also consider Flatiron Wolf by Thom Hasenpflug or Coyote Dreams by Michael Udow.

For a blast from the past, try Marimbastuck with two percussionists by Maki Ishii. Or, change up entirely with Takemitsu's Raintree.

The required piece for the final round of the 2004 International Marimba Competition, Eckhard Kopetzki's Night of Moon Dances (4 perc), was quite good.

How about "PERSONA" by Toshimitsu Tanaka?
Marimba solo + 3 or 4 percussionists...I believe.....

Look into Zivkovic's newest piece for this medium: "Lamento and Danza Barbara". It is a fabulous piece... We recorded it a couple years ago with the "Jovan Percussion Project" (Nebojsa Zivkovic on marimba, Ben Toth, Craig Bitterman, and myself on percussion). Both the music and the recording should be available at Steve Weiss.
