I'm buildiung a marimba set and wondered if I can use pottery (stoneware) or bamboo for the keys. What would I need to do to prevent breakages and where would i find inmformation about constructing from these materials.

I have seen several instruments made by a kind of stone called "Sanukaite". You can get some information from http://www.sanukite.co.jp/stone/stone01e.htm .

Apparently, Mutsuko Fujii has been playing Sanukaite for sometime, and there are 3 CDs published. You can see them here, http://www.kosei-shuppan.co.jp/music/cd/m_hujii.htm , although the pages are in Japanese.
