Spam is more when you receive an unsolicited ad for something unrelated to the topic/interest group you are in. For example, someone selling refrigerators and posting ads for it in a music newsgroup. This group is very focused, and Bill's ad was targetted to this small group. It is timely, since the topic of tuning just came up on the message board.
