Scott is right..padouk is MUCH softer than Rosewood..so not only will it dent with the wrong mallets but low register bars can crack much more easily than rosewood.. Not to jump in front of Scott's reply here.. but by "up the ladder" I believe he means Adams tunes higher harmonics than Yamaha..I haven't re-tuned an Adams padouk marimba yet so I can't vouch for what they may or may not do on that instrument.
