John,

Unfortunately, knowing what my mallet choices were won't help you - when I performed the Creston Concertino (with piano accompaniment) in college (late 1980s), I used my own home-wrapped mallets for the first and third movement (harder cord-wound, over a medium-hard rubber core), and a set of my teacher's mallets, which he wrapped himself (softer, yarn-wound, graduated hardness from the lowest mallet to the highest). Wrapping one's own mallets was much more "in vogue" those days (at least where I went to school), compared to current times. I also used my teacher's old 3.5 octave Deagan marimba, made in the late 50s/early 60s (IIRC - sorry, can't recall the model number), which has an absolutely glorious higher range. I might not have opted for the same mallets had I performed with an orchestra, and I might not use the same mallets now that I did then. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
