I agree with the stretching advice and gradual build up, but I also think that this might be a tension problem. Every correct technique, (or at least sensible) should be entirely relaxed. Percussion techniques include semi- natural movements which must be developed, but should not cause physical harm. When warming up, always use slow, correct, relaxed, and full strokes. Only when the technique has become natural and just "feels right" should the tempo be increased. Through this process not only will the player develop ample technical ability, but also avoid fatigue and physical harm.
