I would agree with all of you, that Process of Invention is an outstanding composition. I received the draft of this music from Christopher Deane in late August of 1995 and recorded it in Feb. of 1996. Yes, it's no cakewalk (I'm not sure I would describe it as a "big fat headache" as indicaited earlier in the thread)! However it is a challenging work that takes a serious time investment.

As Pat indicated, I too never stopped enjoying this music. Chris wrote this work as a campanion work for his marimba solo "Three Shells" and it is very effective.

Invention has many facets: beautiful, complicated, simplistic, driving and enchanting. What more could you want from a marimba solo? It can also be technically frustrating but the work is well worth the effort.

As for preparation ideas: Work on one section at a time. Go slow and always consider balance and blend in practice. Tape your self often at slow tempos for self evaluation. This will save you a lot of time.

Good luck!
