Unfortunately because of the sound in the exhibit hall I did not get a chance to get a good listen to the Planet Marimba, but a comment on the new Malletech. The "princess", as its being unnofficially called, did not impress me. I liked the way the resonators fit together as that seems much easier than the current screws, but the modification of the low end was not an improvement. The narrower bars produced a much weaker sound and lost the low end fullness that Malletech is known for. When She-e Wu played it for the US premiere of Blue Identity it was very well miked and because of that sounded better than it could naturally. It is a good affordable version, but is inferior to the Grand Imperial IMHO. Does anyone think there would ever be a place that all marimba manufacturers could get together in a concert hall and let people hear them side by side?
