Im afraid I have to agree with Rebecca on this. Not only cause Im one of her teachers (well used to be).
Im also a 3rd year college student..Im playing things like Ultimatum 1 and Marimba Spiritual. All Musicians develop at a different pace. Ive seen some olders players with crazy technique but I would rather watch a bag fly around than listen to them play because they are uninspired and boring. Ive heard high school students play with a fire and brilliance that makes me go practice like there is no tommorrow.
If what you're saying was really accurate and not a whine about how you feel someone younger than you shouldnt ever play something as difficult or more than you are, being a musician would be pointless. Also, young virtuosos like Hilary Hawn (sp?) and others totally disprove your point.
It is the challenge of the music that drives us, we shouldnt compare ourselves to others except to drive and challenge ourselves to grow as musicians and people. One of my professors told me that music is both the easiest and the hardest thing you can do. Its what you make of it. So if you're playing 2 mexican dances (which I know several 3rd year college students who are playing that piece or one similar to it) you need to challenge yourself to play it as best you can. Dont worry about the 17 year old playing dream of the cherry blossums (hows that goin btw becca?), worry about yourself and thet challenges of the music that you are playing.
