In response to JW's Email -
I was refering mostly to the "Contemporary Series" line of Balter mallets that have been around for years. I have been exposed to the "Performing Artist" and the "Shadow Series" lines of MB mallets a couple of times. I experienced a slight improvement from using the Performing and Shadow MB mallets, but i still prefer to use Malletech mallets.
Tom Alexander brings up a good point that the selection of marimba mallets depends on what instrument you are playing on. Last year i was learning a movement from a Bach Violin Sonata using the Stevens line of Malletech mallets on a Malletech instrument and they sounded really superb. A couple months later i performed the Bach piece using the same mallets on an Adams 5 octave, and it sounded totally different to me, like i was using the wrong set of mallets for an Adams instrument.
I want everyone to keep in mind {particularly the younger readers who are just getting into marimba} that most of the emails and messages regarding this subject matter is mostly due to personal preference. Just because i prefer using Malletech mallets over MB mallets, doesn't mean that someone else won't get satisfaction from using MB mallets. The same goes for instruments. Just because i prefer to perform on either a Malletech 5 octave or a Marimba One 5 octave, doesn't mean that soemone else won't get a thrill from performing on either a Yahama 5 octave or and Adams 5 octave.
Sincerely, Lon Stetz
