Hi Mike -
The DS18 mallets provide more of a medium hard level sound. After experimenting with a pair of DS18 mallets that were crafted in the early 90's, they used to provide a harder level sound, but the recent versions of the DS18 mallets provide more of a medium hard level sound.
If your looking for a more "lighter" vibe mallet, i recommend a pair of Malletech DS10 or 11, and/ or a pair of Friedman 12's also crafted by Malletech.
