Hey Lon,
Thanks for the kind words. And good luck on your recital!
Yeah, there is alot of great modern Japanese stuff, that is considered not-so-modern now. Its ashame, there is some great stuff out there. I used to play Myoshi's "Torse III", great piece!
In Mirage, I am thinking of exaggerating the dynamics in this piece. For example, in the slow sections with all the rolls, I want to keep it very sonorous but also make a "mp" sound more like an "mf" or a "p" sound more like "pp". And in the fast sections with the really fast grace note runs, I would like to have it kind of non-chalant, like not play them too loud, and to make them "lead" into the last note. So I think maybe two-tones might not be good for that. My problem is that I am afraid that if I crescendo, there isn't enough of a smooth change from the softer note to the louder one. But, I guess I shouldn't break what is not broken, so I will try out the two-tones, and maybe my opinion will change very quickly.
Quick question: Do you play the rolls individually, like one-handed rolls? There is one part where I feel I should do that, but I want to avoid it, because it might sound inconsistent to the rest of the piece. Oh well, I probably shouldn't think too much of it.
You know, about that last page with all those runs, I have been playing this piece for quite a few months now, but when I get to that part, I just stop. Its almost like I am procrastinating to play the end of the piece! I keep trying to find some kind of pattern, but its pretty tricky. I am going to have to really get going on that last page to get it somewhat right. I guess I will try playing the notes more than trying to play the passage fast. I think that is what they like to see in an audition.
After the audition, I will get on here and ask some questions about the Druckman. Its a piece I have always wanted to play, but the time has never been right. That's such a great piece, one of the best contributions to the marimba repertoire.
