Derek,

With Burton grip, small intervals are acheived by extending the index finger to remove it from between the handles, then moving the inside mallet by pushing with the thumb toward the index finger and contracting the little finger. The mallet heads should touch each other (M/m2) without any undue strain in the hand. The hand motion is similar to closing a pair of scissors. Keep the tip of the index finger on the inside mallet handle and open the interval by both pulling down with the index finger and up with the little finger ("down" = toward the palm, "up" = away from the palm). When done properly, it is extremely fast and without tension.
