All good stuff...
As two excellent readers (WM & MH), what are your suggestions for tackling reading issues, especially of keyboard percussionists... as we are on a marimba site...
I personally found that I had completed an undergraduate programme with an ability to perform memorized marimba recitals (1992) frustrated by the length of time it was taking me to learn new literature I forced myself for the last 12 years to read at sight for at least 30mins each day (often much more time was devoted). I basically have 4 groups of material...
1. Hymn books... any 4-part music in treble and bass clef 2. Single line Violin, Flute, Trumpet, Clarinet etc... books which a going to challenge me and reading "easy" material very fast with a metronome to keep me under pressure. Also transposing the Trumpet and Clarinet into concert pitch (fun exercise, but not often demanded of keyboard percussion players) 3. Various "REAL BOOK" jazz lead sheets. Read the head and then "chomp through the chords". I am not a jazz mallet expert, but it's a useful skill to develop. MH would be more qualified to discuss this subject than myself. 4. New Marimba literature which is aimed at high school performers (For Example I have used Bart Quartier's book).
Comments please...
