I totally agree with Matt. On my vibraphones (up to 4 octaves) the bars are on average 1/5" wider than the standard Musser widths. Tho I am using the same alloy as the Mussers, my bars have a darker or as others call warmer soundcolor. I've run my bars and Musser bars thru an analizer and found that the 1st and 2nd overtone were almost similar in volume, while the fundamental on my wider bars were appr. 3dB higher in volume. This clarifies the experienced warmer sound.
This also explains why you need to widen the bars when going downwards on the range. You need to favour the fundamental exponentially vs. the overtones when going downwards to create an even sounding barset. You don't hear the lower frequencies as loud as the higher ones, even when they are at exactly the same level.
Another thing I discovered was that the wider bars offer a much longer sustain, almost double the sustain of the smaller regular sizes.
