By his use of the term "independent roll" in the first movement of Merlin, Andrew Thomas was NOT referring to a "one-handed" roll. He was merely asking that each note of the chord be struck independently of the other notes. In other words, a permutated or ripple roll, as opposed to a traditional hand-to-hand roll.
As the commissioner, dedicatee, and first performer/recorder of Merlin, I will also vouch that NO ONE plays that style of roll successfully for the loud passages of the movement--a traditional roll must be used for those sections.
