Both Ebay and http://members.aol.com/Woodenbars/storfrnt.htm are excellent sources for used mallet instruments. New instruments can often be bought on an installment plan, you may particularly want to check out the adams 4.3 which can later be expanded to 5 octaves. The malletech practice keyboard uses a standard malletech frame, with no resonators. The bars used are defective in some degree: being visually ugly, having weird overtones or something. I think the price is closer to $2000. I think a nice sounding 4.3 marimba would be much more useful than a practice or compromised 5 - there is a >lot< of excellent repertoire playable on the 4.3, and practicing and performing on the same instrument is, as I've just been learning since February, preferable to using different marimbas.
