I just noticed these messages, otherwise I would have posted something sooner. I built that contrabass. It sounds great with the right mallet. When I brought it to PASIC, I tried to find those Encore lates bass mallets, but Dan stopped making them. The marimba didn't respond well to the Balter yarn bass mallets. Emil Richards tried to help me find a suitable mallet (bass drum mallets) but nothing made the bass bars respond correctly. It was disappointing. When I delivered the instrument to the buyer (in Green Bay) He had a pair of those Encore mallets and it was incredible. The higher partials were not obtrusive, and when played in octaves, it was like an amplified bass guitar, only bigger.
I don't have a recording of the contrabass. I'm working on updating the website currently - with sound files. I'm faster at making marimbas than I am at making web sites.
