I agree with you about the Stevens mallets. I tend to prefer something with a meatier sound. Gordon's mallets are great, but as he's got his own grip that's like a Musser/Burton hybrid grip, using Steven's method can be a little difficult.
You might want to check out Burrit's signature sticks. His sticks have a more meaty feel than Stevens but since he also uses Stevens Method, they aren't quite as heavy as the Stout models.
I still have his old Innovative Percussion signatures from back in the day, which IP has now renamed the "soloist" models. But his Malletech Signatures have a similar feel. I'll have to buy some when I get around to it, but the IP's work great too.
