No tax pretty much means no record of transactions. meaning if anything collapses, it'll be impossible to hold the seller responsible.
5 pairs = $30X5 = $150, you're pretty much paying for those since the deal is over-priced as mentioned previously. custom made cover, maybe $200, you're paying for that as well. you can use the same money to buy ANY mallet you want, and ANY cover you want. doesn't have to be from him. ask him to drop the 150 for mallets if you don't want his mallets. and really, you shouldn't look at these as "gifts" from the seller, but rather you're buying it along with the marimba.
the only advantage from the deal is no tax + no shipping. i have no clue as to how much tax and shipping is for US, i'm guessing it'll run you at least $1000 more.
So with all said, It's really your choice. My advice for you is, again, wait for a better deal. With purchasing second hand, you lose all the security and warranties. But if you feel safe enough with the seller, and feel confident on the deal. Go ahead by all means!
Good luck!
