Hi Todd - this question will get a wide varitey of answers I'm sure. When someone is on a budget and not doning recitals all the time a low A may be enough. There is so much good repertoire out there that only calls for a low A that you could keep busy for a long time. I know Yamaha and Adams make a paduk 4.3 octave marimba that is not too expensive, sound is not bad (but nothing like rosewood), and bars are somewhat graduated in size. My high school students that go that route are always able to sell it for a good price when they upgrade (generally, college students buy a 5 octave rosewood these days). If you were thinking of getting a 4.5 octave I'd just go with the 5. Being a Yamaha artist, I've played on a 6000 for about 11 years and would not want to play on anything else (that is a very personal choice but I sure about it). Good luck, Greg
