Are there actually noticable differences in sound between rattan handles and birch handles?
Judging from experience, I think it has more to do with its influence on the player rather than its actual influence on the sound produced. For example, due to the fact that rattan are bendable, one would play more lightly with longer phrasing (legato-like). on the other hand, one would play more aggressively in shorter phrases (staccato-like).
Moreover, it has to do with the grips as traditional grip users tend to prefer rattan handles due to the mallets being hold near or above the sweet spot (like on a drumstick where you grip at 1/3 from the bottom). The rattan provides the flexibility that the grip lacks, hence both equalized out each other.
On the other hand, stevens grip users prefer birch because of the natural instability of the grip (holding mallets far below from sweet spot). the lack of responsiveness of the grip is thus remedied by the stability of birch handles.
Just some thoughts on the subject. So my question, again, is: Are there actually noticable differences in sound between rattan handles and birch handles?
