The Malletech Stevens mallets have acrylic cores, covered with latex. The Malletech Concerto series has a phenolic core, covered with latex. My series with IP has an "acrylic style" core, covered with latex (I don't think Chris ever told me exactly what it is!).
The key difference is that rubber core mallets are mainly "single tone" -- the timbre does not change as you increase in volume. If anything, the sound gets slightly "thuddy" at the loud end. (However, the harder the rubber core is, the more the mallet will begin to sound like acrylic.) Acrylic core mallets are more "two-tone" or "multi-tone" -- the timbre changes from dark to bright as the volume increases.
