You're 100% right that prevention is the key, rather than waiting for the problem to develop and then having to deal with it.
See if your doctor can recommend a specialist who deals with musicians and their physical ailments. Years ago, I read an article by Steve Rodby (bass player from the Chicago area, works with the Pat Metheny Group), and he mentioned that even though he had been having trouble with some of his fingers at one point, one doctor dismissed him because Steve's fingers still worked better than the average person's (I'm paraphrasing liberally here, but that's the jist of it). If you're really having problems with your hands and arms, this would be a better way to go, no disrespect intended towards your GP.
