I would definately say that you should save up for rosewood..but have you looked in catalogs such as woodwind and brasswinds drums in the wind or called Steve Weiss..you can get a 4 1/3 rosewood instrument for a pretty good price, probably better than paying full price for a 4 1/3 accoustalon or padouk insturment. I would definately give a look at those, I in WW&BW I think I saw an Adams soloist rosewood going for about 3800-4500.
However..if you do want a marimba now..I personally would reccomend the Yamaha accoustalon. Even though it is a synthetic it has a very good sound, and great projection..when I play one of those I dont really miss the rosewood too much..Accoustalon just has a very distinct sound that I personally like (as opposed to musser's garbage..you know Kelon, or it Ross's cheap rip-off prolon-sorry I hate ross instruments..) The only thing that kind of sucks about the accoustalon is that the upper keyboard is really high from the lower keyboard..oh and also you have to be pickier about which mallets work on Accoustalons..some just dont (i.e. IP Mark Fords)
just my $.02 Scott
