Joe,
Some of the more common pieces I've seen/heard performed at these auditions:
Timpani: - Beck "Sonata for Timpani" (select one movement) - Williams: Variations for Solo Kettledrums (select one movement) - Firth - solo from his book of 26 etudes for timpani - if those solos are above your skill level, prepare one or two of the etudes from the Friese/Lepak or Saul Goodman texts
Also, be prepared to tune intervals on demand, as in: "Your drums are currently tuned to Ab and Db; please tune them to F and C"
Snare drum: Often, these auditions ask for a rudimental solo as well as an "orchestral" solo - find out what the percussion faculty at each school wants to hear.
Rudimental: - Wilcoxon: selection from "All American Drummer" or "Modern Rudimental Swing Solos" - Pratt solo
Orchestral/Classical: - Cirone: selection from "Portraits in Rhythm" - Delecluse solo
Additionally, be prepared to demonstrate your multiple-bounce roll, perhaps a double-stroke roll, perhaps some of the more common rudiments; also, sight-reading.
(As with my suggested mallet instrument repertoire, these are offered as examples only, and not an exhaustive list.)
I'd suggest investigating whether the school(s) you are auditioning for specify or suggest any particular repertoire - many schools offer suggested repertoire on their web sites. Or, simply telephone or e-mail the percussion faculty at each school - they can tell you exactly what they're looking for.
