Hmmm...I wonder how much of the "clangy" sound your conductor is complaining about, comes from the Acoustalon bars...(yeah, they're better than Kelon, but they're still not rosewood.)
As tough as it is to offer a mallet suggestion from halfway across the country via the Internet, I'd suggest looking for a mallet that offers a very strong fundamental tone on marimba. I've just recently tried out some Balter mallets which might work pretty well for the marimba part on that piece, models #122 and 123. (Specifically, the ones I have are #122R and 123R - I'm not sure if Mike offers them with birch handles instead of rattan, but you can always go to www.mikebalter.com and ask him).
Anyway, these mallets bring out more of the fundamental of the bar than my Samuels mallets do. Maybe other folks here at marimba.org could offer suggestions for other brands' mallets which might accomplish the same thing. I certainly don't mean to imply that the Balters are the only choice.
