The "best" sound of the marimba bar comes from nowhere. The dead center of the bar produces a very full sound, rich in overtones and very mellow. As you close in on the node, the overtones dissapear and you get a more percussive sound, more punch to it. The end of the bar is a slight mix of these but you lose volume. However, the "best" sound is the one that is appropriate for the peice. If it's right on the nodes or in the center of the bar, so be it, but there is no single best spot to play in.
