For Mallet Selection, it is really depends on the player him/herself......Weight, touch, and tone, as well the color and feel you want is really different from each other. Can really judge others comment over buying new mallet.
For the start, Birch or Rattan, already is a choice of feeling, and power. Of course grip maybe affect the options. Second about Cord or Yarn or other things, about the touch and tone you want... weight is really depends on yourself, someone like heavy, someone like light......
You cannot only fixed a Brand or so, or try to mix with different brand of mallet. But whatever come first, Is the best you can try before you Buy!
Good Luck!
