You're grossly overstating the difficulty and time commitment involved with wrapping mallets. Also, even if one never gets to the point of making his/her own mallets for use in performance, every percussionist should at least have the experience of making their own mallets, if only to gain a better understanding of why certain mallets sound the way they do.
