That's interesting the King George from 35/36 was tuned like that. I wish I could hear it. But if those are the only two you know of, then I guess it wouldn't be a good idea to try it. ;) (Ahhhh, another thought down the drain!)
Yeah, but if that King George sounds like the ones I've played, I think it might be an idea worth resurrecting! And needless to say, just because most marimba manufacturers are doing one thing, is no reason in itself that someone couldn't - or shouldn't - do something else.
And yes James, I don't think I've heard a restaurant piano in tune_ever_! hehehe I guess it would be a lot easier if vibes & marimbas could come with a pitch bender like you see on synth keyboards! maybe you can do that on your new xylosynth? I read your review, sounds like a cool instrument.
I think it's a great instrument - best mallet synth I've ever played (and I know, that might sound like "damning iwth faint praise" to some, but I mean it at face value). FWIW, the XS doesn't offer that fine level of control over intonation, but it also doesn't have any onboard sounds - just adjust whatever synth(s) or sampler(s) you're using to the pitch of your choice.
Not that I'd use the XS as a "substitute" for a marimba...but that's a long, tedious rant , and I'll spare everyone here at marimba.org the agony.
