Regarding the time-keeping theme, there is a generally anal preoccupation with metronomic time within drummers and percussionists, yet comparitively little discussion about feel and ensemble.Whilst striving for perfect time is a laudable goal it must take a back seat to making the time- flow feel good, not only to each other but also to the audience. For example,Wesley Smith's piece for marimba and tape requires the performer to be able to place his playing in different places on and around the strict metronomic pulse of the track.Yes,the "Fifth limb" principle of the voice is definately the way to achieve good time, but the definition of "good time" is perhaps of more musical value than an obsessive desire for the unattainable (and in my opinion, the undesirable) unmoving, unwaivering, unbending regularity of perfect time.
