I would say that it is extremely rare for me to use four identical mallets on marimba; more often are combinations such as A-B-B-B, A-B-B-C, B-B-B-C, A-B-C-C, etc.

However, for this to work, all the mallets must be from the same basic line, just varying degress of hardness, e.g. IP501, 502, 503, & 504.
