Yeah, that is true. After experimenting with it a bit, its definitely worth doing. I woul dnot go as far as having four completely different mallets, but maybe the first mallet softer than the rest or the fourth one as the hardest. For "marimbistic" pieces, I think that its definitely worth doing it to bring out the proper voices, as you said. Though for other things like Klatzow's Dances of Earth and Fire (of which I am working on now), maybe having just one mallet different might be the best.
