well yes, you do still get some articulation. But, in this particular piece, there are not really extended soft passages exclusively in the lower register, and when there are (like in the beginning), I think it is important for the articulation to be there, so one can feel the rhythm of the bass line.
If you wanted to get rid of articulation you would need to use a softer mallet, but that might not let you use that mallet in the upper register which you have to do.
try to find some sort of compromise...like perhaps slightly softer than what you would prefer to use.
