I'm also working on this piece at the moment, and was running into the same issue. However, I discovered the Innovative Percussion Janis Potter series mallets...I'm not usually a fan of Innovative but these are working great for the piece. I'm currently using, from left to right, 402, 403, 403, 404, which is working quite well. All of the mallets in the line will cut through in the upper register, although the softer mallets require a little more weight to do so. Anyways, I thought I would just share my experience...mallet choice for this piece has definetly been a challenge for me (as well as to most people I've known that have played it).
